This week I thought I would pick a photo and tell a story about it. It is not a prize winning photo, but it is a photo I dearly love and when I show it to my wife now and again, she pauses, thinks about it and smiles at me, remembering that day and the circumstances.
It was a very specific date in time. (I leave that unsaid because of the nature of the Internet and privacy concerns.) We were passengers on a tall ship that was sailing the Whitsunday Islands near the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. We were about halfway on our journey when we anchored and took a small dinghy to shore, hiked up a short hill through the tropical landscape to Whitehaven Beach. The water and sky could not have been more blue, the sand more white, the foliage more green. The island is accessible only be boat, seaplane or helicopter. And, we were there.
It was a significant wedding anniversary, and we could not have been at a more beautiful spot in all the world. When we got home, I printed a 17x22 print of this image and wrote in the margin, Best Day Ever. I pull the print out now and again as a reminder of that day and our trip to Australia that year.
And what a trip it was. In addition to our wonderful tall boat trip, we spent time in Sydney, had one of our best meals ever (we still talk about it) and walked across the top of the Sydney Harbor Bridge. We went to Cairns and spent time in a tropical rain forest. Somewhere along the way, Carol left her purse hanging on the back of a chair at a restaurant. When we finally tracked it down, we were told, no worries, we knew you would figure out where it was.
So, this picture triggers lots of great memories for us, and I hope this was a good story for you. It’s why we make photos.
Thanks for stopping by.
