I used to regularly write blog content when I worked for MerlinOne, a digital asset management (DAM) provider that was bought by Canto in 2023. I rather enjoyed writing them, it was a way to tie all my skills together (photojournalist, DAM specialist, instructor) and share them. I wrote about DAM stuff (that joke never got old to me) and I wrote about things that people immersed in digital asset management would understand; things like “Dublin Core,” and IPTC and XMP metadata standards.
Since my retirement in 2020 I have been concentrating on my photography and have really enjoyed getting out there, practicing my craft and hanging out with other photographers. I have kept up with emerging metadata standards, but not quite as seriously as I used to. In the spirit of you are never to old to learn something new, or teaching an old dog new tricks, I try to keep up with photo technology and how emerging ideas may affect the way we work.
I make pictures mostly for myself and my family and friends. I often share iPhone albums of my travels, and my wire service background does not let me linger. I normally have edited, processed and uploaded my photos the same day that I shoot them. Fun to do that. My wife likes looking over my shoulder and often helps me get a different perspective on my photography. Normally if she points something out, I try to make a good image…she saw something I did not.
My latest trick, you are looking at it. I created a new website (it took me a weekend) using Zenfolio and published it. This will allow me to not only share my photos, but allow people to purchase them if they want. I like the idea of people liking my images enough that they want to hang them on their walls.
So, this is my first blog on my new website. I plan on writing more. I feel fortunate that I am able to do this and continue learning. Now I need to learn more about SEO.
